What is Discipleship?
Christian discipleship is the process by which a person becomes a committed follower of Jesus Christ. Discipleship helps a beliver to
Grow in their faith in Jesus
Grow in Christian character
Grow in obedience to Jesus’ teaching
Discipleship is not just about what you believe, but living out those beliefs in everyday life, as part of the community of Christian believers.
1. Following Jesus
At its core, discipleship means learning from and following Jesus. We seek to live as he instructed and modeled for us. Jesus said,
“Then Jesus said to them all, “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)
2. Transformation
Discipleship involves personal transformation. As a disciple grows, the Holy Spirit works in their life to change attitudes, behaviors, and desires, shaping them to reflect the character of Christ. This transformation comes as old beliefs and minds are challenged and changed.
“Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:2)
3. Learning and Teaching
Discipleship includes studying Scripture, prayer, and learning from mature believers. It also involves making other disciples—passing on what you’ve learned to others. Maturing disciples, make more disciples.
“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19–20)
4. Community
Discipleship happens best in community. The early church modeled this by sharing life together, encouraging one another, and holding each other accountable.
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and signs were being performed through the apostles. Now all the believers were together and held all things in common. They sold their possessions and property and distributed the proceeds to all, as any had need. Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with joyful and sincere hearts, Praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. Every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:42–47)
We who have become believers in Jesus Christ are engaged in a lifelong journey of becoming more like Him. Discipleship calls for an INTENTIONAL COMMITMENT, impacting our life and relationship to and with Christ and fellow believers.
